RAMfest V: dust, Redbull and a whole lot of electro

This past weekend was the fifth RAMfest festival held at the Nekkies Resort just outside of Worcestor. My friends and I spent the three days getting down, dusty and deranged on the dance floor at one of the most popular South African music festivals around.

We arrived at the site around 2pm on Friday afternoon and after we set up our tents we headed to the main stage to check it out. There were a number of food stalls along the way catering to pretty much every taste bud around and I made a mental note of where the med tent was. There was a “hydration station” initiative on offer; you buy a RAMfest bottle for R40 and you get cool, purified drinking water for the rest of the weekend. In the blistering heat we decided it was a good idea.

SA events for March 2011

Kyle Sheperd

South Africa is a very happening place with music, performance, art, cultural and family events scheduled all over the country. You’ll never experience a dull moment in the region as long as you keep abreast of the regular happenings. March is no different with an impressive array of things to do and places to be.

At Assembly in Cape Town, local band Desmond and the Tutus will be rocking out onstage. According to the venue’s website, this band performs “an infectiously awesome blend of Rock ‘n Roll, Indie Kwela Pop and Genius”. Check them out on 26 March in the Mother City.

Night Drive set to thrill South African film audiences

Can you survive the dark?

It’s a suitably intriguing tag line for a horror movie, isn’t it? Especially when you consider that the director says that it’s “gory as hell”.

Night Drive is an entirely South African horror film, with an SA-born and bred director (Justin Head) and a local cast. It’s set in a game reserve where a night game drive goes horribly wrong for a group of average holiday-makers. It incorporates topical issues such as poaching and persistent problems such as muti-murders, with some heartfelt human interest thrown in for good measure.

South Africans will relate to the cast of characters who share our problems and echo our views, as opposed to the often botoxed, plastic mannequins US film-makers serve up.

Bridget Jones comes back for another round

When the first installment of Bridget Jones’s Diary hit the cinemas people around the world were quickly endeared towards the frumpy, awkward thirty-something whose lack of self-esteem is easy to relate to. Now it seems the funny Brit is back for a third time.

Women 24 reports that the “Queen of embarrassment” will be appearing on the big screen again soon. She’s single, thirty, can’t fit into a size eight and has serious love issues, much like the larger portion of the population, which might explain why the two previous films did so well. Bridget Jones’s Diary raked in more than $166 million worldwide, according to Renee’s Fansite, and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason took in about $40.2 million at the box office.
